Refugees visit our school

Festus and Omar, along with Carole Parkins from 'Walking With...' visited all Y5 and Y6 pupils to talk about their experiences as Refugees in our country.  They shared personal information and, at times, were very emotional as they explained why they had to flee their respective countries and leave their family behind.  Y5 and Y6 listened to our visitors with huge respect and awe, and, when offered the opportunity, asked really good questions.  Everyone, including the adults, were deeply moved by the whole experience.

This visit links with our current Literacy theme.  We are reading 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan and 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman; both novels explore refugee status  - one in a fictitious world and the other, a child's experience of the Holocaust in Poland during World War II.  The visit gave the children first hand experience of what it is like to be a refugee, to give them a deeper understanding of this very relevant modern day issue and to write with greater empathy within literacy lessons.

A huge thank you to Carole from 'Walking With' who acted as a link coordinator for the visit and a very special thank you to Omar and Festus for sharing their personal history so willingly with us.
